House Reef West
Visibility is usually good (up to 25 meters) and the reef life itself is fairly good up to 18 meters, although the top of the wall and into the shore has been damaged by mooring in some places: new rules for boats should help to solve this. The top of the wall all along the 900-meter beach is a natural coral garden with a splendid display of small fish, which includes baby barracudas, red fins, amethysts and purple Anthias. On the sandy bed at the bottom of the reef live the sand eels which sway with the waves. For those swimming back to shore for a nightcap of their own there is one warning: watch out when you get to the eel grass and have to start walking – it is the favourite place for a lot of spiny sea urchins. For those affected, the best solution is vinegar…but in emergency you are allowed to wet yourself by using uric acid – followed by a tot or two of whatever makes you think the pain has gone away! The same last treatment for your neighbour will also make sure your neighbour does not turn up his nose at whatever you’ve done! |
