| Cabilao Hammerhead
sharks once populated Cabilao Island in considerable numbers, but an
expedition by Siquijor fishermen caught in a storm on their way to
fishing grounds off Palawan a few years back almost wiped out the
residents, which at one time numbered over 300.They are now on their way back, having been given a bit of a rest and with islanders themselves realising the wealth that was on their doorstep. You will still be lucky if you see Hammerheads, but the island has a wealth of other interesting specimens brought down by the north-south current which flows between Bohol and Cebu: this includes the Pygmy seahorse, some beautiful nudibranches and the Dragon-fish. There are several dive sites around the island, but as this is a long trek from Alona only one or two will normally be visited at any one time. | |
